Waste-Not Living

Jesus Feeds the MultitudeGod wastes nothing. I know this fact intuitively. I spent last year in Nicaragua, Kenya, and Brazil as I prepare to be launched into full-time international missions. I am presently teaching an internationl business course for students gaining a master's degree in business administration. My first class was yesterday. As I began talking about globalization, ethics, human rights violations, imperialism, and colonialism, I never imagined how all of my recent  missionary trips abroad would enable me to teach from a truly international perspective  how integrity, equity, and ethics can be used in  a secular setting. I shared about the scriptures requried by the class syllabus,  in addition to many others, all the topics, plus several others, for almost 3 hours without stopping just based on what I experienced on the mission field.

God has opened my eyes to the fact that missionary work is really a business; there is a bottom line, and it better be in the black.God is educating me even as I teach these students; as I teach these business principles,  I am learning them as well. In fact, my students' project is launching a private all-girls school,  like the ones God has commanded me to do,complete will all the necessary guidlines for minimum wage, safety concerns, human rights concerns, etc.  I have three MBA students brain-storming the encorporation of  my school in Africa.

When Jesus wanted to feed the mulitude of 5,000,  He asked his disciples what to do: "When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do." (John 6: 5-7).  Like Phillip, it is tempting to respond with a lack of faith- looking at the multitude and not at the God who multiplies division or even Andrew, who has a bit of faith, but then allows reason to get in the way: "Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many? (John 6:7-9).

However, Jesus gives simple instructions, gives thanks to His Father, multiplies the offering, and picks up the leftovers .Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

Jesus wastes nothing. He picks up the pieces, and He had the same amount with which He began the ministry: "When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. " (John 6: 12-15).

I know that God wants to take us and break us to the nations, but are we willing? Are we like Phillip saying it can't be done or we like Andrew, we start with faith but do not end with the faith?

A New Season

Dear Friends,
As I step out in faith, I am excited to see God’s provision in allowing me to be part of His work in Kenya, Africa from June 25th to July 6th. Please pray for peace to continue in Kenya , our safety as the 15-person team travels to Africa, and for our days in the field.  I see this summer trip to Africa as another step in God’s unfolding plan leading me to full-time ministry.
Shortly after I return from Kenya, I will be representing Christian Educators International Association of Houston, of which I am co-director with Don Clark. I have not been to a national meeting since I was awarded 2008 CEIA National Teacher Award, so I am very excited to see the members of this awesome organization. I plan on bringing my flags and at least one dance garment two dance. In the above picture, I am holding two of the flags that I will be taking and leaving in Kenya in our church plant.

Please pray for God's direction, wisdom, and leading as this CEIA makes shifts in policy and the decisions for the future. Please pray that Don and I, together with all the other leaders, will be in unity and minister in power and the anointing of the Holy Ghost. May we have spiritual ears to listen to God's directions and hearts to obey.
Later this summer, I will be a part of Bibles to Nicaragua from July 24- July 29th as part of  the YWAM Nicaragua project to get Bibles into the hands of all the Nicaraguans. Right now, YWAM-Nicaragua and two other ministries have given Bibles to every home in the city of Diriamba. They are working in a small town called Jinotepe, but they still need around 2,000 Bibles to finish. To complete the saturation of the region, they will require another 35,000 Bibles. Ministry goals include home visitation, personal evangelism, and Bible distribution.  In addition, we will give tracts to the Bible recipients so that they can learn how to read and understand God's Word.  We are presently a team of 5 people. Currently, we have collected three thousand dollars, and we can purchase 750 Bibles.
I am believing God for this academic year (Fall 2011- Spring 2012) to be my last teaching in the public school. I have always viewed the public school as a field ripe unto harvest, and I have encouraged others to seed, water, and till in its furrows. I have had a heart for reconciliation between Jews, Arabs, and Africans for 20 years, and I believe it is the season for me to move out into this ministry. Please stand with me as I prepare to leave for the international mission field full-time.  Please pray that God will raise up supporters of the ministry to which He is calling me. Please pray for my endurance and hope. This step has been a long-time in coming- more than 12 years.
Also, I have been praying since my teens for someone to minister with me on the field. I would appreciate you bringing all of these concerns before. God said that He released a new mantle of authority on my life last November; well, a new level of spiritual warfare has been unleashed against me, but, I boldly declare ,"For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I  have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die." Philippians 2:20
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness  and streams in the wasteland.
Isaiah 43:19

News and Other Happenings

Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.  I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. I Corinthians 9:19, 22-23.

So what's happening with me? A great deal. Well, I am going to Kenya. I will be gone this summer for a short-term missions trip. I have seen God's faithfulness in so many things- team members, finances, and prayer partners. Earlier, I wondered which trip to take- one to French-speaking Africa or this trip to Kenya.  God showed me His direction through His provision.

God wastes nothing. When I was getting my doctorate, I received a concentration in African Studies from Northwestern University, but I have never been to the continent. Go figure! Now, I can use all that study and preparation to a blessing to Africa. Even my trip to Brazil was an important stepping stone in this venture: I relearned how to work with team members,  how to come under authority to those in leadership, how to lean on the Holy Spirit's guidance, and even how to live on the field with severe anemia and digestive issues - eating beans and rice and eggs every day.

Our ministry team of 15-20 members will evangelize from house to house (hut to hut), participating in crusades at the new church plant in a small village, nine kilometers north of Kitale, in the western Kenyan highlands, and ministering at several schools and prisons.

I step out in faith, excited to see God’s provision in allowing me to be part of His work in Kenya, Africa . Please pray for peace to continue in Kenya , our safety as the team travels to Africa , and for our days in the field.  I see this summer trip to Africa as another step in God’s unfolding plan leading me to full-time ministrt.

"For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I  have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die." Philippians 2:20

Signing off (definitely, with more to come),
M.J.

Return to the Mission Field- 12 years later

As I enter into  the city of Curitiba, in the region of  Paranha, Brazil,  it's hard to believe that 12 years have passed since I was here last. Many hours of prayers and walking have bathed this city since I left its bosom years ago. My heart rejoices in God's provision to return. When I left, there was only one Youth With A Mission (YWAM) base; now, there at least 4 bases. God certainly deals in multiplication.

I have traveled through much of Europe, the Caribbean, North America, South America, and Israel. Yet here, the beautiful land, verdant and alive, fills my spirit. I see God's bounty and goodness in this place.

New friends and old places. Words of promises. I hear God  speak to my very soul: "Come and rest in Me."  And tiredness slips away from me like an old skin.  I stay in a little house on a hill. Everyday, I walk the hill or sit beneath the trees and listen to Him.  The lush green grass is a fresh carpet beneath my feet and the trees overhead provide an exhilarating canopy. I sing and pray in this quiet place.  I allow God to heal my pain and give me a new vision for working things out for me to go full-time on the mission-field. Africa is next, perhaps. Then from there to where?

As I prepare to leave teaching in one place and embark on teaching God's word wherever He leads, I know I must remain centered in His presence. When I first joined YWAM, I was given a life-verse- one, I hate to admit, that I immediately dismissed; since then Psalm 16:11 has become the banner for my life: "In your presence is the fullness of joy, and at your right hand, there are pleasures for evermore." I have experienced much in life in the way of worldly successes, but nothing compares to being still in His presence.

I pray that these entries will help you remain rooted and grounded in Christ as we seek to together to bring His kingdom in fuller measure here on the earth. I invite you on this journey as God completes what He began in me 12 years. Who knows where it will lead next? I've determined to follow the Shepherd where're He leads.

Your Fellow-traveler,
M.J.

It's been hard for so long,
but You are carrying me
when I hear nothing
when I see little
When I feel too much

You carry me

When I fall down
When I feel defeated
When I only want to give up
You carry me

From day to day
You stay the same
You carry me

You carry me

I don't know how
I stand up or walk
or how I can even crawl
but You lift me up

and You carry me

You carry me

This waiting room of trials
and expectations
beneath a load of cares
makes heavy feelings deepen
to despair

But even now O' Lord
with awe in my heart
I know You hear me and care
for You carry me

You carry me

Over the threshold into eternity
Carried in Your arms
for all to see

A beautiful Bride
I will always be
